Haiti is the poorest country in the
Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the population living under
the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty.
In this small nation, it is estimated that 400,000-800,000
children are orphaned, abandoned or at risk. The projection
of orphans continue to rise after the earthquake.
15% of Haiti's children are orphans. This is
more than double the regional average and has been attributed
to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. As in many nations, Haitian
orphanages often house children whose parent(s) are poor as
well as children who are abandoned, neglected or abused by
family guardians.
Our work in Haiti is focused on strategic initiatives
to reach out to thousands of orphaned children by providing
medical care, water purification, nutritious meals and education.
We partner with an experienced Haitian relief organization
to provide immediate relief, renewal and a long-term, positive
impact.
Due to the devastating earthquake
in Haiti, the need is urgent and overwhelming and will be
for years to come.
